 What is NFS?

  • Network File System(NFS), is a client-server protocol for sharing files between systems in the network.
  • NFS Server export a directory to the network and NFS client mount a file system on remote directory exported by NFS server as if like local file system
  • You can access all the files from client system as if they are local though those files are actually stored on the NFS server.
  • NFS server and NFS client are Operating System independent but  should be running required services to establish network file system.

Condiguration for NFS

  • Package : nfs-utils
  • Daemons : rpc.nfsd, rpc.mountd, rpc.statd, rpc.lockd, rpc.rquotad
  • Script : /etc/init.d/nfs
  • Port number : 2049
  • Configuration File : /etc/exports
  • Other imp files : /var/lib/nfs/etab, /var/lib/nfs/rmtab
